Show Information

Heather Lewis BHS Accredited Professional Coach BHSI, Inst SM will be our instructor for this clinic.

Why use lateral movements for training your horse?

One of the most written words on dressage score sheets is 'Suppleness'. Along with other exercises, lateral work is extremely useful for improving your horse's suppleness, both over the back and to the bend. The placing of the hind legs further under the body, or crossing them over, means the muscles act in a different way and the horse's ability to take weight behind is improved.

In this training session we will use a variety of exercises to introduce or improve lateral work. If you or your horse are new to the lateral movements this clinic will break down the requirements and give you homework to practice. If your lateral work is already established, we will look at the correct positioning for test riding and move on to a more challenging exercise. There is something for everyone! We will group people together who are working on similar exercises where possible but if you are travelling with a friend who has slightly different requirements we can tailor the exercises accordingly.

When booking, in the class notes please say what level lateral work you wish to do based on the following:

Level 1 - No previous experience of lateral work or just started some gentle turns on the forehand or leg yield

Level 2 - Can do turns on the forehand and/or leg yield but needs developing. No experience of shoulder-in or just started.

Level 3 - Established leg yield. Shoulder-in established or needs developing. Starting quarters-in.

Level 4 - Horse understands leg yield, shoulder-in and quarters-in (either counter-flexion or straight). Starting travers, half-pass and walk pirouettes.

Level 5 - Established travers and half-pass and want to improve suppleness and positioning. Looking at walk pirouettes and renvers
