Orienteering in the Surrey Hills
Starting from Heath Farm Munstead (home of the horse trials), choose from a 12km or 18km route. Mainly on bridleways, both routes have some roadwork (minimal on the shorter route, more on the longer route but it is on quiet roads).

Both routes are a reasonable distance and hilly, the shorter route is more suited to people who don't want to go too far and don't mind mainly walking and trotting, it stays fairly close to the venue and is fairly easy to follow. Not many places suitable for cantering but some lovely views along the way in mainly quiet areas you might not normally get to explore. There is an optional short cut part way round if needed. Takes roughly 1.5-3 hours depending on how speedy you are.

The longer route will suit more adventurous horses and riders, it covers a large area, taking in some stunning countryside with places you can enjoy long canters, varied terrain and interesting obstacles, requires reasonable horse and rider fitness as there are quite a few hill climbs, will suit those who enjoy endurance and fun rides, you shouldn't get lost but does require close attention to the directions in some places! Optional pub stop half way round. Expect to be out for 2.5-4 hours.

Full directions will be provided and also maps in case of emergencies.

For the competitive there are questions to answer and things to find along the way with scores being added up at the end, but there is no pressure, you are equally welcome to come just to enjoy a lovely hack and day out with your horse.

We encourage everyone to come in a pair or small group. If you don't know anyone else going I can find a team for you to join. Discounts for CDRC members but non-members welcome.

As it's at Munstead we also have access to the cross country schooling and show jumping field on the day (please let me know if you want to use this so I can factor it into timings, I'd advise not to if you're doing the longer route unless you and your horse are extremely fit!).

Both routes will start in the morning with the longer route setting off earlier to allow them more time to get around.

Please put in the comments/notes if you are coming with other people and want start times together - we will issue your times 2 to 3 days before the event as groups will go at 10 minute intervals to give everyone some space on the route.
