Alice Oppenheimer and Headmore Delegate join Elite programme
|
|
Nupafeed wish to congratulate Alice Oppenheimer who, with her home-bred Headmore Delegate,
has been selected to join an elite programme backed by Team GBR, designed to help promising
horses to compete and challenge for medals at future Olympic Games and World Equestrian
Championships. Alice, who is based at the family's stud in Four Marks, Hampshire, is
already a successful 'young rider' and has recorded excellent results at national level.
Seven year-old 'Headmore Delegate' is by the Grand Prix sire Dimaggio, and in 2008 and 2009
was awarded the best British-bred five-year-old and six-year-old respectively by the
British Equestrian Federation.
Alice, 20, comments: “It is every rider's dream to be able to compete at an Olympics or
World Games. 'Delegate' will be reaching his dressage prime for the Rio Olympics in
2016 and that is a major target for me. Meanwhile, the support of the 'Equine Pathway'
and other potential sponsors will be invaluable to us both. It's an honour to be
chosen.”
Congratulations to Alice from all at Nupafeed.

FLY and SUNBURN Protection from EQUILIBRIUM®
|
The Field Relief® Max Fly Mask combines the best of protection against sun and insects,
with exceptional comfort for the horse. It is made from a fully breathable mesh which blocks
out 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, while ensuring excellent visibility. The mask has
been carefully designed to fit the horse from the tips of the ears to the end of the muzzle.
Lighter coloured horses and those with white blazes and pink muzzles can also suffer from
painful sunburn during the summer months. Field Relief® Max can help prevent these nasty
sores as the mask protects the horse from over exposure to the sun.
Field Relief® Max is also ideal for horses and ponies in high fly and midge infested
areas. The mask is made from a very densely woven mesh, which gives excellent visibility,
while completely encasing the head, protecting the horse from the tiniest of flies. Its
accurate fit minimises the risk of insects getting inside the mask.
The mask has excellent attention to detail in the design. Soft padding at the brow and
around the nose and several darts ensure that the mask sits well clear of the face,
eyes and eyelashes. Together with the combination of a rigid mesh for the central
panel and a super-soft net for the rest of the mask it is very comfortable for the
horse to wear for long periods. The adjustable and detachable nosepiece allows the
fit to be tailored to each horse or it can be removed completely if not required.
RRP: £32.50
Sizes: Extra Small to Extra Large (Horse Over 17h) Plus Donkey Small Donkey Large.
Colours: Black with Red Trim, Grey with Blue Trim

|
|
|
|
Dates for the 2010 Oliver Townend Eventers Challenge Championship series are now
available online via Equine Affairs - The UK's Biggest Riding Diary.
This year promises to be a great year for the event. We have a new jump sponsor, Countryside Showjumps and all its jumps are made from solid timber which will give the course a more rustic and authentic look.
We have included more regional qualifiers this year and the first five from each show will go through to the final on December 18th and 19th at Aintree.
The winners of the final will, as usual, receive the ultimate prize - a training day with Oliver Townend at his yard in Shropshire.

Show Jumpers hit new heights with Trailblazers
|
|
|
Trailblazers has introduced 1.10m and 1.15m show jumping competitions.
The new height classes, part of Trailblazers’ 2010/11 competition series sponsored by SEIB, are open to senior competitors riding horses exceeding 148cms.
In line with Trailblazers’ usual format, First and Second Round qualifiers will culminate in 1.10m and 1.15m national championship finals sponsored by Spillers.
The additional categories mean Trailblazers senior show jumping classes are at maximum heights of 75cms, 85cms, 95cms, 1.05m, 1.10m and 1.15m. The junior show jumping competition series includes two 65cms classes (for riders 12 and under and 16 and under respectively), 75cms, 85cms, 95cms and 1.05m.
Trailblazers First and Second Rounds are run at 60-plus approved show centres across the UK. Centres will schedule the new 1.10m and 1.15m classes at their discretion from this summer.
The development reflects ever-increasing standards at Trailblazers show jumping shows and subsequent demand for bigger height classes.
“Many competitors have been asking us to put on 1.10m and 1.15m classes,” said Trailblazers director Norman Bargh.
“We believe 1.10m and 1.15m classes will appeal to event riders wanting pre-season practise, amateurs seeking more of a challenge and anyone wanting to give horses ring experience without ‘putting money on their cards’.”
Riders in the top 150 on the British Showjumping (BS) rankings list are ineligible for the Trailblazers championship finals held annually at Stoneleigh Park, but can compete in the First and Second Rounds. Riders aged 13 and over may compete in Trailblazers senior show jumping on horses over 148cms.
Trailblazers also runs national dressage, showing and combined training series sponsored by SEIB. The 2010 Spillers Trailblazers Championships take place on 23 July to 4 August.
When competing with Trailblazers, there are no annual subscriptions or horse and pony registration fees to pay. The only sum competitors are asked to contribute above each centre’s standard class entry fee is £12 per competition entry when they qualify for and choose to progress to Trailblazers Second Rounds.

Oliver Townend and that Rolex fall...
|
|
|
Would you believe that his helmet looked perfect on the outside?
By now, everyone will have seen either video footage or pictures of Oliver Townend’s horrific fall at Rolex Kentucky and we are all so thankful that Oliver did not suffer more serious injury. Without doubt, such footage reminds us all about the important part that our safety gear plays in helping to protect us in the event of a fall from a horse, as we all know that riding is a risky sport. And while every hat manufacturer would recommend that a hat be replaced after a fall, Oliver’s fall at Kentucky should also remind us that even though a hat may look fine on the outside, it may have suffered severe damage during a fall, which is not always evident at first glance.
Oliver sent the Champion Ventair helmet that he was wearing at Kentucky back to the Champion factory in Cardiff, so that their technical experts could evaluate the extent of the damage. While the internal damage was described as ‘extensive’, on the outside the only evidence of damage to the helmet is a slight scuff mark. When the hat was stripped apart at the Champion factory, however, the shock absorbing polystyrene liner of Oliver’s damaged helmet was shown to have been crushed at the front left side down to 11mm, while the pictures taken of the stripped helmet also clearly show a crack on the opposite side where the liner has been crushed to 17mm. A new undamaged liner is approx 21mm at these points, a difference of up to 10mm. Further examination of the helmet also showed a large indent in the rear left lower side of the liner, which technical experts believe was made by the impact with the log, with measurements showing the liner had been crushed at this point to 13mm, which comp ares again to the 21mm thickness of a new liner.
No one can dispute the fact that Oliver’s fall at Kentucky was horrific and that his helmet should undoubtedly be replaced. What Champion’s technical examination makes clear, however, is the fact that you should not rely on the outward appearance of a helmet to assume it’s in good condition. In Oliver’s case, although his helmet looked almost perfect after the fall, it was clear from structural analysis that it had done its job well – a job which was to absorb impact to help protect him from a more severe injury.
So for safety’s sake, if a hat or helmet suffers impact in a fall, replace it. After all, it’s easy to replace your hat.

BD Trainers: Helping Riders to Enjoy their Horses & their Sport
|
|
|
|
The British Dressage Trainer’s Database
If you teach dressage and work with a core group of riders you can
apply to join the BD Trainer database. To join you will need to have
public liability insurance and a current first aid certificate. You should
be over 18 and must commit to your Continued Professional Development
(CPD) and either the BD National Convention or the National Trainers
Forum or the Judges Seminar. At the moment BD does not offer a
trainer accreditation scheme but this is set to change as the new
UKCC level 3 Dressage is made available following a successful
pilot.
Trainers who would like to join the database should contact Ruth Tyler at
the BD office for an application form. Ruth explains, “The Trainer’s database
is a great advertising tool, it enables trainer to align themselves with BD
as a brand and it allows us to have an open dialogue with trainers. In the
future it is hoped with the introduction of the UKCC level 3 Dressage that
we will be able to develop an accredited database.”

LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE – RIDE SAFER AND BETTER
Petplan Equine is once again delighted to be sponsoring Lucinda Green’s X-C the Safe Way clinics in 2010. The clinics are designed to teach riders the skills to ride safely and effectively across the country. Petplan Equine is dedicated to finding ways to help riders gain maximum enjoyment from their horses as safely as possible.
Lucinda Green is the only rider to have won Badminton six times on six different horses and she has also won an Olympic team silver medal and two individual European Championship gold medals to add to her list of achievements. Her clinics reflect her passion for giving riders the benefit of her experience to help them understand the way horses think and react while tackling a cross country course.
“With more and more people coming into eventing, I am keen to help B.E. in their desire to enable people to have the fun and feel the safe while riding cross country.
Learning how your horse thinks and being ready, through your balance, for every unexpected eventuality, are two vital ingredients that are critical to the success of cross country riding from the lowest to the highest level. It is that understanding that I endeavour to develop in my clinics.”
The clinics take place in locations around the country over one or two days and can be tailored to suit riders of all standards. To take part both horse and rider should be happy jumping a course of at least 2’6” – 2’9”. Each clinic involves a session working with poles and stands before heading out onto the cross country course. Lucinda shares her winning skills and techniques to help riders ride a cross country course to the best of their and their horse’s ability.

2009 KBIS National Convention: Sellout crowd enjoyed top talent
Over two thousand people converged on Addington Manor Equestrian Centre over
the weekend to see the world famous dressage rider and trainer Jean Bemelmans
(pictured) train some of Britain’s top combinations at the KBIS British
Equestrian National Convention. Jean was impressed with what he saw and
predicted a great future for the sport of dressage in Britain, even describing
Carl Hester and Sasha Stewart’s Uthopia as Britain’s answer to Totilas.
First to go was Emile Faurie on Katie Byrom’s six-year-old stallion Samba Hit
lll. Jean commented that a young horse with such a big frame needs to be
ridden low and deep, and to learn to carry itself. Afterwards Emile commented “It’s good for people to see that it’s not always easy. He’s a very green, very inexperienced six-year- old and he’s never been in this kind of environment before, Jean helped him to go much better.” |
|
|
Lara Griffith was riding Dawning Hopes, a twelve-year-old Danish mare by Blue
Hors Silvermoon, owned by Hilary Sawyer and Leonie Porter. Jean Bemelmans told Lara that her horse should be more in front of her and told her: “Ride uphill, she has to be in front of your leg. You need to do lots of transitions to improve the expression of the horse.”
Maria Eilberg was riding her brother Michael’s horse Torino. Jean thought
Maria should sit deeper in the horse and keep pushing for more. With Amy
Stovold and MacBrian, a twelve-year-old Swedish bred gelding, Jean saw a lot to like describing him as “ the right type of horse for the work with nice expression.”
Jean Bemelmans also rode his Grand Prix stallion Lanciero, who he explained
can be very naughty! He showed how he warmed him up every day at home. Then Jean amused the audience by showing them a “game” he likes to play by turning round and touching the horse’s tail. “The most important thing I have is an independent seat and body control over my own body.” He explained that he never rides with a whip generally because the horse must be obedient and listen to the leg. Lanciero was very fresh and put in a few kicks and bucks, “At least you have seen that it’s not just you that has problems, we all have problems every day too. Up to PSG anyone can do it but Grand Prix is an art, as in life you need a little bit of luck!”
Current National Champion Carl Hester was riding Sasha Stewarts eight-year
old Dutch stallion Uthopia. Jean found very little to criticise and went on
to say that he can’t teach Carl much. Summing up Jean described Uthopia as
Britain’s answer to Totilas, Carl said; “It’s a tall order to live up to and
a hell of a responsibility, but I’m very proud of how he’s turned out –
I’ve had him since he was four.” (Courtesy of British Dressage) |
