Rusty is in very good condition and holding his weight very well. I would not want him to hold any further weight but as your workload returns to normal this should help to maintain his weight and tone him up. He is lacking a little muscle over his topline particularly over his wither but again this is probably due to his lighter work regime over the last few weeks. To help develop this muscle in this area and help maintain this through lighter workloads I would recommend that we increase the balancer to boost the quality protein content of the diet. Protein is one of the major nutrients required by the horse to build muscle, thus elevating the quality protein of the diet should help develop Rusty’s topline.
Having made some enquiries on the cereal or starch content of the Top Spec Cool Condition Cubes I do not have an equivalent product that I feel is suitable to replace them with without increasing the starch content of the diet, which may negatively affect Rusty’s energy levels. However you could consider increasing the volume of sugar beet in the diet. Feeding an unmolassed sugar beet such as Speedi Beet minimises starch intake considerably but supplies the same level of calories/energy as the Top Spec Cool Condition Cubes. Therefore to further lower Rusty’s excitability you could consider replacing the Cool Condition Cubes with higher quantities of Speedi Beet whilst still able to maintain Rusty’s current weight and condition.
Alternatively if you are happy with Rusty’s current energy levels or do not feel he will eat elevated levels of Speedi Beet then I would suggest that you continue to feed the Cool Condition Cubes alongside the Baileys Outshine and replace the Top Spec Feed Balancer with the Baileys Performance Balancer.
I would also suggest that you consider trying Rusty on the Outshine with added spearmint to see if this helps tempt him to eat it more readily.
Feeding Recommendations for Rusty:
Moderate Work (up to 1 hour work/day)
8lbs (3.5kg) of Top Spec Cool Condition Cubes
2lbs (0.91kg/4 mugs) of Performance Balancer
0.5-1.5lbs (0.25-0.68kg/1-3 mugs) of Outshine per day.
Or
2.75lbs (1.25kg) of Speedi Beet (dry weight prior to soaking)
2lbs (0.91kg/4 mugs) of Performance Balancer
1.5lbs (0.68kg/3 mugs) of Outshine per day.
Both the above diets can be bulked out with the Dengie Alfa A Oil. I would
recommend that you feed in the region 2lbs (0.91kg/2 round stub’s scoops) per
day. If you find that Rusty will not eat this quantity I would suggest that
the Performance Balancer is increased slightly by 0.5lb (0.25kg/1 mug) per
day.
This will ensure that he is receiving the optimum requirements for protein
to help support muscle development.
When introducing any new feed into the diet I would recommend that you do this
gradually over a period of 7-10 days.
It may also be beneficial for you to supplement the diet with the Baileys
Digest Plus prebiotic. As Rusty can drop weight or become tucked up at a
competition or during travelling. This is often due to the bacterial
population becoming disrupted through excitement or nerves. Supplementing with a
prebiotic helps to maintain the bacterial population by feeding the beneficial
bacteria and strengthening them. I would suggest that you feed 20g (2
of the enclosed scoops) per day.

When Emma came to see Rusty he had been in light work for a few weeks as a bit of a holiday so was rounder than normal. I was very impressed with my folder that had all my new feed measures in. Rusty is now back in full work so the weight has come off and that's when I worry that he loses his condition, this time though thanks to the Performance Balancer and Baileys Outshine Spearmint (fussy) Rusty has kept looking fit and muscled. I was really pleased with his photos from our latest show his coat is amazing and top line really starting to build even bigger. The best thing of all though is that the oil diet is working, as he's not got hypo or silly, just more controlled energy. |

KATE:
RUSTY'S WEIGHT:
27 September: 620Kg
4 November: 681Kg
I’m really happy so far with Rusty on the Baileys Feed programme. I have noticed his withers are filling out more and he is definitely keeping his condition well; especially as he’s working hard and has been competed.
His mental health hasn’t changed; still lively and mad but rideable which is a first when trying new feeds! I put him on the probiotic before the show which I think helped as we won our class. Rusty didn’t like the Outshine but Emma sent me Spearmint Outshine which smells lovely when you open the bag; he loves this Outshine!
The balancer is easy to use; a cup in each meal. The only thing I’ve had to change due to Rusty’s condition being so good is to cut the Alfa Oil down. The test will be next weekend as we have two days training away at Anna Ross-Davies yard and a show on the third day - so hard work and travelling. Will let you know how it goes.

EMMA'S THOUGHTS....
Rusty generally looks more muscled and athletic, which will be due to
him now being back in full work but also supplying him with the correct
nutrients to ensure that through training he is able to develop and maintain
his condition and muscle tone. As Rusty has a tendency to drop weight
when he is competing or at times of stress I have suggested to Kirsty
that at these times she can increase the amount of Outshine to help
support Rusty’s calorie intake. This will also help support the increase
in work during competition days helping his stamina but will help to
support his weight so he maintains a more constant bodyweight.

KATE:
RUSTY'S WEIGHT:
27 September: 620Kg
4 November: 681Kg
6 December: 681Kg
When I went away for training with Anna Ross-Davies everyone was so impressed
with how Rusty looked, which was great. He did behave himself until the show
when he wouldn’t walk in his tests but this wasn’t down to his new feed regime.
He still won’t eat when he’s away working which is still a problem but now he
is carrying more condition he did keep his weight better this time. Just need
him to eat so he can have his calmer!
I have since moved yards and he is eating well as his pals moved with him. He
lost some condition due to the move and the snow upsetting him on the roof off
his stable! I love the fact that the Performance Balancer and Outshine are so
easy to cut down when in less work and that when I up them before shows he
carries on eating them.
Rusty went back on the probiotic before the move and for this week as we are
away again this weekend and a show next Tuesday. I do really think this helps
his gut as we don’t have loose droppings when away now.
The other thing I have noticed is even when clipped his coat is still amazingly
shiny so a big thank you again to Emma and Baileys for their help.

RUSTY'S WEIGHT:
27 September 2010: 620Kg
4 November 2010: 681Kg
10 January 2011: 679Kg
I can't believe my trial has come to an end. What a difference Baileys has made
to Rusty. I wish I’d known this year’s ago!
Rusty has been getting better and better with Emma's diet. He looks amazing and
everyone has commented on how his coat gleams and now has amazing topline.
The best thing is that he now keeps his weight when he is away and working harder.
The prebiotic is invaluable to me now a week before a show or staying away. I
have now taken out the Top Spec nut and replaced them with Baileys Top Line
Conditioning cubes which hasn't upset his brain either. I will carry on feeding
him the same from now as he is so much more rideable.
We have stayed away training mainly and he now eats when away. I did do a show
and we we're first and second so really pleased. This year is our year to crack
on and compete as much as I can; a show every month starting with music in two
weeks. I also plan to stay away at shows through the summer and now we have a
brain his work has been upped a lot and I will be pushing him up the ladder.
Summer qualification to get before June so lots of work and training to do.
His weight now is 679 - all muscle and a fit tummy line. So once again a massive
thank you to Emma and Baileys.

EMMA'S FINALS THOUGHTS....
Rusty looks great and I’m really pleased with how he has come on. His
topline and overall condition was good when I first saw Rusty but he
has come on leaps and bounds and looks fantastic. His muscle tone and
topline has improved and he is holding his weight very well. I’m thrilled
that Kate has managed to try Rusty on the Top Line Conditioning Cubes and
his energy levels are acceptable. When Kate is reducing Rusty’s diet
during lighter workloads or days off I would recommend that the Top
Line Cubes are reduced before the Performance Balancer and Outshine.
This helps to reduce the energy content of the diet further whilst
the balancer can maintain Rusty’s nutrients requirements. Currently
I would not change Rusty’s diet as it is suiting him well.
Kate may wish to try adding succulents such as carrots or apples to
Rusty’s fed when at a show to see whether this helps tempts him,
spearmint, a little molasses or even a small handful of coarse mix
may also help. If everything fails then minimising his feed to just
the Performance Balancer and maybe the Outshine so he receives a very
concentrated amount of nutrient and calories may be the solution.
This enables Kate to provide Rusty with a balanced diet and gives her
something for the calmer to be added to. Feeding up to 1.6-1.8kg
(3.5-4lbs/ 7-8 mugs) of Performance Balancer day will be sufficient
to support Rusty’s nutrient requirements during harder work
intensities.
