If you’re anything like me the thought of Dressage alone is some what daunting so embarking on Dressage to Music can fill you with sheer terror! Having investigated this on a few occasions it always started with great enthusiasm only to be extinguished shortly after. The thought of designing my own test and then choosing the right music, editing and so on just seemed too much to take on - where to start? Having watched many tests at local & national level its not just designing a test with the required movements but showing your horses individual strengths and personality whist involving and capturing the imagination of the audience and judge. The service offered by Freestyle Dressage is perfect for any Dressage to Music wannabe whatever your level. The Freestyle Dressage teams objective is to make the design and production stage easy because ultimately they want the performance to be about you and your horse, about your tastes and relationship. The team take the stress of production away; they edit the music, advise on choreography and as registered instructors they were also able to help improve my horses way of going. The day was great fun from start to finish with no pressure on either the horse or rider; Alison immediately put us at ease. The day starts with the team getting to know you and your horse; your strengths and weaknesses, your personalities and ultimately what you want to achieve from the day and your routine. The test we designed was suitable for unaffiliated and Riding Club Novice competitions. Alison assessed Vinnie’s way of going and paces whilst we rode a selection of Novice movements around the school. Whilst we took a well earned breather Alison designed our Novice test incorporating the required movements. Alison discussed the test with me giving me reasons why each movement had been chosen. There were 3 key elements which Alison made clear were important to the Judge and getting a good mark. Firstly, they look at the choreography - can they see what movements I am doing where, riding accurately is key! Secondly, the harmony between horse and rider - do I make it look easy, I shouldnt be rushed or tense, I should make it look as if both Vinnie and I have plenty of time to complete each movement. Finally, the music - does it provide a great fit with the breed and personality of horse and rider!! The test made use of some less common movements to create interest as well as making great use of the arena and was very easy on the eye. We rode through the test a few times working on the individual movements. Once we were all happy the test was videoed so the music could be overlaid back at the office. Alison was very efficient, professional, friendly, knowledge and above all passionate about designing a memorable test. The day contained useful tips throughout particularly from the judges prospective. Unlike a conventional test the judge hasnt seen your floorplan so its crucial that the test flows and each movement has a clear start and finish so you can be marked for each element. A messy/ unorganised test can make it difficult for the judge to award those all important marks! Two weeks later the final music and routine was ready to see - We watched it through from start to finish 3 times in utter silence – Alison & John had done a fantastic job - we all loved it! The music reflected his paces and personality perfectly. Once you are happy with the test and music the team provide you with a complete pack including your floorplan, CDs, Video, BD paperwork and more. It really is everything you need to compete! The real test was entering my very first dressage to music competition - under strict instructions not to over practice in case Vinnie anticipated all our movements we went to a local unaffiliated competition to test out our routine. Much to our surprise we won our Novice class with an impressive 71%! Thank you Alison & John! Our Verdict - Competing to music made a refreshing break from normal dressage and we would recommend the experience to any rider whether you are a dressage diva or simply a weekend hobby rider who wants to have some fun with your horse. Working with the Freestyle team takes the stress out of designing your routine allowing you to enjoy the fun part - the performance!

Freestyle Fun - Making Contact with the Team To get started in freestyle contact the Freestyle Dressage Production Team visit www.freestyledressage.co.uk. Freestyle Dressage can help you with all you need to get started in freestyle with their Freestyle Pack. They offer a full range of services so whether you need music samples editing, a floorplan designed, music routine creation or advice on the computer software available they are happy to help! Freestyle Dressage work in partnership with Equine Affairs and Equine Affairs members can claim discounts for clinics and the Freestyle pack. Music Matters- A routine you will enjoy riding to! When customers register with Freestyle Dressage they are sent a link to a customer questionnaire and music feedback form on the website. Customer feedback is vital for the design stage so the registration process includes a selection of music samples for the rider to listen to and comment on to help the team understand their musical tastes and preferences. These samples are not the tracks that will be used they are intended as a point of reference. On the Day... The clinic has been designed to have a friendly and formal atmosphere but it is also the chance to dress up! The floorplan is created on the day and filmed so that the rider has a visual record and so that the team can match music to the routine. Most riders like to dress either as though for competition or some choose to wear a smart waist coat or similar. The emphasis on the session is the floorplan creation. The team work with the rider to ensure it is a floorplan they are happy with and one that will highlight the partnerships strengths as well as wowing the Judges. Choreography... Riders will need to choose which competition they are aiming for as this will determine arena size and the technical requirements of the test. For example BRC Novice tests are held in a 20 x 40 arena whilst BD Novice tests are generally held in a 20 x 60m arena. The Freestyle team will talk through the options with riders and help them design a test that is unique and fun to ride. Call Michelle Garland at British Dressage on 024 76 698832 for Music Membership Information and the Test Criteria for each level. Back to the Studio! After the clinic the team return to base with the video footage and the rider’s feedback forms and begin the process of matching music to the horse and the routine. The horse or ponies paces are assessed and analysed and then suitable tracks are chosen. Once we have a match we overlay the music onto the DVD footage and email the rider the link to the website so they can comment on the routine. The Freestyle Pack... Alison and John created the Freestyle Pack to help make freestyle dressage accessible to all. The pack includes to competition cds, floorplan, BD paperwork and the DVD of the routine with music overlaid. The DVD is a great learning aid as you can watch yourself ride to music and see where the music changes. Once riders have their pack they need to join BD either as a Music Member or as a full member so that they can join BD’s agreement with PPL. As a BD music member, riders can compete in all BD music classes as well as PC and BRC competitions and be covered by BD’s license with PPL. Riders need to sign a copy of the license agreement and then return the paperwork included in the freestyle pack to BD who will then issue stickers for the CD box. Then you are ready to go. Finding music classes is simple with Equine Affairs easy to use schedule search and then its time to start dancing with your horse. |
